THIS HAS BEEN AMMENDED; see 18th October.
Since an 'honest' quantum mid-term requires more time than the 1hr15min
class period allows , the midterm will
be given Thursday evening, 31st October (as indicated on the syllabus)
and will be a 2 to 2.5 hr exam.
There will be no class during the regularly scheduled time on
Friday, 1st November.
As indicated on the syllabus, the chemistry 163A final is assigned
the time slot: Wednesday, 4th December,4:00-7:00 PM. Please note this
NOW and make your plans accordingly since this is the only time
the exam will be given.
If you have a disability which may interfere with your learning
or require special testing arrangements via DRC, please come to
discuss this, on a confidential basis, with me.
DATE: Wednesday, 18th September 2002
Regarding homework problem #3: You may be interested in to what
the 900 Kg Edsel refers??

DATE: Wednesday, 18th September
Homework 1 will cover problems #1-3 and is due in class on Wednesday,
25th September. Please put your section below you name.
DATE: Wednesday, 25th September
Homework 2 will cover problems #4-10 and is due in class on Wednesday,
2nd October. Please put your section below you name.
DATE: Wednesday, 25th September
The formula on HW prob #5, part c
might be confusing: it should be read cos{(k/m)^.5
the t is NOT under the square root. On September 21, a typographically clearer version of problem #5 was put into the WWW handouts.
DATE: Friday, 27th September
The first OPTIONAL section which delves into some of the
mathematical and philosophical issues (for which we do not have
sufficient classtime) will be held:
2nd October, 2:00-3:10
391 Thimann Lab
In this first section we will be discussing
the uncertainty principle and the virial theorem.
DATE: Wednesday, 2nd October
Homework 3 will cover problems #11-16 and is due in class on Wednesday,
9th October. Please put your section below you name.
The Chemistry 163A midterm will be given on 30th October 2002 in Thiman Lecture 3 from
7:00-9:00 PM. There will be NO class on Wednesday 30th October [there will be class on
Friday, 1 November].
DATE: Wednesday, 9th October
Take-home Quiz:
What 1929 song by Fats Waller describes why the energies of the PIB wavefunctions are quantized (i.e. why only certain sinusoidal wavefunctions are allowed) ?
Answer
DATE: 9 October
Homework 4 will cover problems #17-20 and is due in class on Wednesday,
16th October.
DATE: 14 October
The second optional section will be on Wednesday, 16th October, Room 391 Thimann, 2:000-3:10. In this
section we will explore the details of the solutions of the Schrodinger equation for the harmonic oscillator (see handout #17). In particular we will "do the math"
to show why these solutions "misbehave" unless the energy eigenvalue is E=(n+1/2)h nu0.
DATE: 16 October
Homework 5 will cover problems #21-25 and is due in class on Wednesday,
23rd October.
DATE: 18th October 2002
The Chemistry 163A Midterm will be held on Wednesday, 30 October, 7-9 PM,
in Thimann Lecture Hall 3. There WILL BE a regular chemistry 163A class on
Wednesday, 30th October; but we will NOT HAVE class on Friday, 1 November.
DATE: 18th October 2002
Copies of a sample midterm are now available on PAPER [not ERes] reserve
in the Science Library. The section leaders will be prepared to discuss concepts/solutions in section the week of 28 October. Plerase note that
the material on the rigid rotator and hydrogen atom on the sample midterm will not be
included in this year's midterm [we are having the midetrm a week earlier this year]
DATE: 23 October
There will be no homework due the week of the exam.
Homework 6 will cover problems #26-31 and is due in class on Wednesday,
6th November.
DATE: 5 November
The third optional section will be on Wednesday, 13 November, Room 391 Thimann, 2:000-3:10. In this
section we will discuss some further aspects of quantum mechanical measurements including material in the optional handouts, #29 and #30. We may even visit with Schrodingers cat!! I also hope to show a video about the great figures of quantum mechanics and the "Schrodinger's Cat" debate.
DATE: 6 November
Homework 7 will cover problem #32 (not 33-34) and is due in class on Wednesday,
13th November.
DATE: 13 November
Homework 8 will cover problems #33-35 and is due in class on Wednesday,
20th November.
DATE: 13 November
Chapter 8:
Sec 8-1, 8-2 (variational method for Zf), 8-4, 8-5 (Pauli Principle), 8-6 (Slater Determinants, prob #33), 8-7->8-10 (possible optional section, 20 Nov), AND HANDOUT (periodic Properties)
Chapter 9 (KNOW material in lectures):
9-1, (will NOT cover valence bond method), 9-6 (molecular orbitals), 9-9, 9-10, 9-11, 9-12, 9-13, AND HANDOUT
DATE: 20 November
Homework 9 will cover problems #36-38 and is NOT due in class on Wednesday,
28th November. This homework will not be turned in; however solutions will be posted on ERes.
DATE: 22 November
Copies of a sample final exam are now available on PAPER [not ERes] reserve
in the Science Library. The section leaders will be prepared to discuss concepts/solutions in section the week of 25 November. There will also be
a review session on Tues, 3 December, where the sample final will be discussed.
