CHEM1B-02 is a class that will cover the same material as the CHEM1B-01 lecture but will employ an "active learning" approach. As Fall quarter looms near, it is quite reasonable for you to ask what will be involved in taking this class: What do we hope to accomplish ? What methods will we use? What will be expected of the students? Fair enough, here's a quickie preview.
In CHEM1B-AL three major aims of the active learning exercises will be:
- to actively engage students in the material as it is presented
(NO student imitating a "bump on a log" !!;
NO panic attack attempting to 'learn?' material the night before the exam" !!)
- to challenge you to understand how science approaches and attempts to solve novel problems and observations
- to present key concepts in a format that is engaging and especially "memorable"
To meet the aims you will be 'active' in utilizing:
- Weekly homework problems using WebAssign
- Learning objective worksheets
- 10-20 minute out-of-class videos (1-2 each week) covering material that is integrated with topics presented in-class
- Class sessions and discussion sections covering CHEM1B material in an interactive format.
- Students presentations of class lecture topics
- Team and pair-share activities designed to focus on difficult concepts
Students will be expected to:
- class and section attendance are vital
- contribute conscientiously to team based learning experiences (just like at a Silicon Valley Tech !)
- keep current with worksheets and other material
- demonstrate that you understand and can creatively apply CHEM1B concepts via graded weekly HW,
2 midterms, and final
