Discussion Sections
Discussions sections are VERY useful and an essential part of Chemistry 163B. The first meetings of discussion sections will be on Monday 13th January, Tuesday 14th January, and Wednesday 15th January.

WE WIIL BE USING THE TU 5:20-6:25PM SLOT AS THE WEEKLY DROP-IN TUTORIAL (open to all students). The first DROP-IN TUTORIAL will be on Tuesday 7th January (a good time for reviewing partial derivatives and getting a head-start on HW#1 Probs 1-2.)

Students who have registered for one of the sections will be given priority on enrollment. However if you haven't enrolled in a section or wish to change sections, just go to that section and ask the TA if there is sufficient room [no need to change official enrollment with registrar]. However each student should ultimately have have a regular weekly section (and TA)..

Handouts
On the Chemistry 163B WWW HANDOUTS page you will find handouts for various topics in Chemistry 163B. For the parts of lectures presented in PowerPoint the illustrations for the presentation will be available in the "Handouts" WWW page (viz. handout #3). You may find it very useful to print these out before each lecture and to make taking lecture notes easier. In addition, handouts #3 and #6 will be especially useful for 7 January lecture.

Carnot Efficiency Diagram Handouts
WARNING: Although material that will not be on Midterm #1, the class lectures 9-10 are definitely "triple esspressos" , i.e. somewhat dense!; but really important. The class handout page now includes four handouts related to deriving how the "efficiency supremacy" of the reversible Carnot machine relates to the Second Law.. These will inexorably lead us to the state function ENTROPY.
IT WILL BE VERY USEFULY TO YOU TO HAVE THESE AT HAND (printed or electronic) DURING THE LECTURES OF JANUARY 27, 29 and FEBRUARY 3.
They are
#21 Review of Calculations for Carnot Cycle
#22 Carnot Engines and Carnot Cycles in Reverse Refrigerators and Heat Pump
#24 Engines vs Carnot Heat Pump Efficiency Diagram
#25 Yes my child, it is OK for εirrev < εcarnot for sections week of 3 February
and thank you !!

Onward
With Midterm #1 come (and gone?) it is important for the class to refocus on the new and very important 2ndLaw material. HW#4, due Wednesday 5th Feb. is a 3-problem set (#23 to be covered in sections) reinforcing the connections between the Clausius and Kelvin phenomenological statements of the second law and the efficiency of Carnot engines and refrigerators. HWhints#4 are now available on CANVAS.
HW#5, due Wednesday 12th February will have 11 problems (25-35) and dealing with specific aspects of S and ΔS.
ADVICE:get going on HW#5 early!!

Midterm #2 Week

Midterm #2 will be given on Friday, 28th February.
It will be essential to be in class on time (12:00 Friday) so that you will have the full 65 minutes to complete the exam. Arrangements for the DRC testing have been made through the PBSci testing.

Material to be covered on the exam and resources for review are available in handout (#46) .
NOTE: Review session, Wednesday, 26th , 7:00PM-8:00PM, Classroom 2.

Although the material in the recent week's lectures (16-18) will not be on midterm 2, it will be 'prime' for the final (and HW#7), so it is important to keep up, up, up !!

UPDATE: Homework #7 Due Date EXTENDED
sent in response to 5 March campus closure:

Hi (our) CHEM163B Class,

EXTENSION FOR SUBMITTING HW#7 IS NOW WEDNESDAY, 11 MARCH 5PM. in class Wednesday or in the CHEM163B HW lockbox (lower level right in mailroom between 230-240 PSB)

HW#7 and HW#8 represent very important topics for the more detailed "problems" which will appear on the 163B final. Many of the resources that we usually utilize to reinforce the lecture material have not been available this week. The TAs (who, believe it or not, really care about your learning thermo) recommend delaying the due date of HW7.

So collection of HW#7 (the last HW assignment to be collected/scored) is postponed until after next week's round of M-Tu-W sections, tutorials and office hours. But guaranteed that your life and times will be more enjoyable if YOU DON'T DELAY and finish HW7 NOW!! I will be putting the HW#8 probs 56-60 (colligative properties and electrochemistry) on the WWW tomorrow. It will not be collected but solutions will be on CANVAS before the week of our final. I will soon put a schedule of special office hours and review sessions for the week of March 15-19 on our WWW site, During these times Evan, Pam, and I will be happy to answer questions on the problems in HW#8.

take care,
gene switkes

Final Exam: Tentative Resources
The class handouts now contain a schedule of support resources related to concluding the class lectures and preparing for the final.
  • Follow your CANVAS messages for notifications of the substitution of ZOOM conferencing for in-person sessions
  • If there is no cessation of in-person final exams, the Chemistry 163B final will be conducted as scheduled (19th March 4:00-7:00PM Classroom 1)
  • In the event that an in-person final exam is not feasible, a 'remote' exam (of some sort) will be scheduled for (19th March 4:00-7:00PM)

  • On 10 March 2020 we were notified that there would be no in-person classes and exams after 11 March.
An update on the nature of our on-line final exam was sent to students via CANVAS and is available in the handouts.
